19th Annual Tournament

Big Success!

Mark Weir reports the Nineteenth Annual DIFF Club Surf Fishing Tournament was held September 30 through October 1, 2004.  There were 145 pre-registered entrants, with 129 officially signed-in to participate on Thursday.

Roger Wise, DIFF President and Bob Vogel, Cape Lookout National Seashore Superintendent welcomed everyone on a beautiful early fall morning.  Lee Paramore of the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries spoke about fish tagging kits and examining puppy drum, flounder and trout carcasses.  Frank Tursi, Cape Lookout CoastKeeper for North Carolina Coastal Federation, spoke about a comprehensive fish mercury level program currently under way.

Tournament rules were reviewed and the Black Drum and Pompano categories were announced.  The “posse” was ordered to bring in the 7.20-pound “Wanted Poster” Puppy Drum and an increase in prize money with expansion from 5 to 6 place winners was announced. The DIFF Tournament is a fun event, not a professional tournament.  It is simply about bragging rights, with prize money used as a way to keep score.  After roll-call, the DIFF members faced the American flag as Helen Wynnberry played a beautiful rendition of America The Beautiful.  The scene was so stirring that a woman riding by on a 4-wheeler stopped suddenly to observe the ceremony.  Scott Mosley offered a prayer of thanks and good fishing.  The tournament began with “Ladies and Gentlemen, Start Your Fishing”.

The DIFF Tournament began as a Red Drum Tournament in
