a woman caught the biggest red drum in the club's annual
surf-fishing tournament.
Cathy Barker won the $500 first prize in the drum category with a fish that measured 74.5
inches (length plus girth). Another woman, Benita Braswell, finished second with a 73-inch
drum worth $225.
Women didn't do too badly in the rest of the tournament, which was held Sept. 24-26 on
Davis Island. They caught the largest fish in three of the six categories.
Karen Snipes won the pompano category -- and $400 -- with a monster 2.9-pound fish that
was two pounds heaver than Terry Johnson's second-place fish. Karen's fish was so big that
Jack Dunaway got to counting its scales to make sure it wasn't a permit.
Sharon Rivenbark tied Larry Taylor for the largest whiting. Each caught fish weighing 1.1
pounds.
Kevin Davis brought in the only Spanish mackerel in the tournament -- and he caught it
just a couple of hours before the weigh-in. It was barely a keeper, weighing less than a
pound, but it was big enough for the $400 first prize. The remaining winners in the
category were picked through a random drawing.
There weren't as many multiple winners this year as in past tournaments. Only three people
were double winners. Davis also finished third in the drum category and was the
tournament's largest money winner with $525. Johnson also caught the fourth-largest
whiting and went home with $350 in total winnings. Mike Mathews was third in the drum
category and fourth in the bluefish category and won $300 in prizes.
Everything went so well during the tournament -- even the weather cooperated by not
raining on our barbecue lunch for the first time in three years -- that the club's
tournament committee plans no major changes for this year's tournament, scheduled for
Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
One change in procedure worth noting: Anyone entering this year's tournament will receive
a postcard confirming their entry.
